Download Youth Ministry is a new site where youth pastors can purchase lesson plans, graphics, and other resources for their ministry. Started as a side project by Doug Fields, Joshua Griffin, and Matt McGill, DYM is advertised as “providing quality resources that are easy, inexpensive, and trench-tested.” All of the resources and lessons have been used in their own youth ministries. The prices are so low ($15 for a 5 week lesson series) because they only sell digital copies of the resources.
My Experience
Over the last month, our youth group lessons have been based on the Facebook: Official series from Download Youth Ministry. Purchasing the curriculum from DYM was simple and easy, just like any other online store purchase. Tip: I suggest you set up a login for the site; that way you can come back and download your resources again. The files downloaded as a .zip file. In that file were 5 Microsoft Word documents – this was the extent of the curriculum. Each Word document is a week’s manuscript of the lesson. Since the original Facebook Official series was created and taught by several people, each week’s manuscript is different in terms of layout, formatting, etc. Each manuscript provides A/V direction on when to show video clips and pictures – none of which is actually provided. There are visuals available for some of the lesson series, but you need to purchase them separate.
Overall
If you are looking for a full-featured curriculum for your next youth group series, there are lots of more helpful options out there. Sure, you will spend more than you would at Download Youth Ministry, but you get more in return: series outlines, teacher-friendly manuscripts, lessons designed for a broader audience instead of a specific youth ministry, and promotional/illustration media.
However, if you are comfortable using a curriculum only as a guide or starting point, crafting and shaping the messages to your own group, then the lessons from Download Youth Ministry should suit your needs.
You can find resources on the Download Youth Ministry website and follow the site on Twitter.
